What Is Direct Access Care?

Direct access physical therapy is essentially the removal of the middle man. In this case, the physician. Some physical therapy practices do not require a physician’s referral to receive treatment or consultation. Now, this does not mean that the physician is excluded from your plan of care. All health care parties should be involved as appropriate. What this does allow, is a fast track to receiving the most appropriate care.

Since most orthopedic conditions are treated conservatively anyway, does it make sense to go a medical doctor for something that is much more in the scope of a physical therapist in the first place? You may ask, what if it’s a more serious condition that requires more medical attention? Physical therapists are trained at a doctorate level to rule red flags in and out. Whether there is meniscus, ligamentous, or even systemic involvement, we can refer out for further medical attention if needed. However, often times, even if there is actual structural damage in your body, your physician will most likely recommend physical therapy first anyway.

Direct access saves precious time and money. Patients do not have to pay for a visit to receive a referral nor do they have to suffer through frustrating wait times. Do you think elite athletes are waiting for weeks to address their injuries? No. Some athletes are now starting the rehab process within 30 minutes of trauma. The sooner your orthopedic condition can be managed, the better.

Direct access… getting rid of the “DMV” experience. Get treatment now.

These are things to think about when considering a health care provider. Quality of care and timeliness are generally better with direct access. Therefore it’s important to consider your options, especially with something as serious as pain or trauma. If you are suffering from an acute injury or chronic pain, feel free to schedule a no-strings-attached phone consultation where we can discuss your symptoms, goals, and answer any questions and/or you may have. No more waiting or hoops to jump through. Let us get to the bottom of your symptoms sooner than later… just one of the many benefits of being direct access!
